Sikkim Manipal University (SMU)

Sikkim Manipal University was established in 1995 in Sikkim. This University is a joint venture of Government of India and Sikkim Education Trust. The campus of University is located at Gangtok with surrounded by Kanchendzonga Mountains and Teesta River. SMU has the recognition of University Grant Commission (UGC) and is approved by Government of India. The motto of University is EXCELLENCE THROUGH INNOVATION. Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT), Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS), College of Physiotherapy and College of Nursing are the constituent institutes of SMU. The hospital of SMIMS is the largest hospital in Sikkim which provides very good medical facility to the citizens.

SMU is well known for the distance education programme which are carried out through Sikkim Manipal University Distance Education (SMUDE) with the help of more than 6,500 mentors and the SMUDE’s programme is approved by DEC, i.e. Distance Education Council. Distance education courses are available in ten disciplines. More than 700 authorized learning centers are available for this programme in all over India. The University also provides education in overseas with 25 learning centers across 20 countries.

The University has won many prestigious Awards in the field of education and rewarded by many Magazines. In 2009 University received the award of Digital Learning ICT Enabled University of the Year at 5th E-India Conference. In August 2010 edition Careers360 magazine choose the institute as Best Distance Learning Institute. Forbes Magazine chooses the SMU as the 2nd Best University in India. 

University provides many facilities like EduNxt which is a unique facility. This University is the only University in India who provides the EduNxt facility for the students. The University also provides Education Loan facility through leading Banks to the student at very low Rate of Interest. Students may get minimum of Rs. 50,000 and maximum of Rs.1, 50,000 as loan.
