Mumbai University
Located in the heart of Mumbai, Maharashtra, Mumbai University is one of the oldest universities in India. Mumbai University was established in the year 1857 by Dr. John Wilson. Back then it was modeled on the universities of the United Kingdom. Originally Mumbai University used the Elphinstone college building as its headquarters. Later on various campuses were set up to impart knowledge and look after the administration. The list of Mumbai University campuses includes the Fort Campus, Kalina Campus and the Ratanagiri Campus. The Fort campus primarily looks after the administration process only and doesnot serve as a learning centre. Mumbai University offers various types of certificates, diplomas and degrees. Degrees offered by Mumbai University include Doctoral, Masters and Bachelors. Mumbai University imparts knowledge through affiliated colleges. Affiliated colleges are spread throughout Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Raigad, Thane and Mumbai. Mumbai University was recently awarded a five star rank by the NAAC and was ranked amongst the top five hundred universities in the world. Several well know colleges like the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Institute of Chemical Technology, Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute and St Xaviers were affiliated to the Mumbai University before becoming autonomous. Mumbai University sports a huge central library called the Jawaharlal Nehru Library. The Jawaharlal Nehru Library houses twelve hundred rare manuscripts, thirty thousand microfilms and a staggering eight and a half lakh books, e-books, encyclopedias, theses, scientific journals, etc. The entire library and the documents contained is computerized. Apart from the Jawaharlal Nehru Library the Mumbai University also has a two hundred and eighty feet tall clock tower called the Rajabai Clock Tower that was modeled on the Big Ben. Mumbai University’s alumni includes well known people like Praful Patel, Aditi Govitrikar, Vidya Balan, Sunil Gavaskar, Lara Dutta, Mukesh Ambani, Lal Krishna Advani and Mahatma Gandhi.
