The Annamalai University is a residential and unitary university which was founded by the Dr. Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar of Chettinad, in the year 1929. The University is one of the preferred Universities among young students as it has nearly 49 Departments of Study and more than 3240 faculty and staff members. This Public University is exactly situated in Annamalai Nagar, Chidambaram, in Tamil Nadu, India. The university provides academic courses of higher education in both arts and sciences. With about 1000 acres, the Annamalai University campus holds colleges, library, hostels, and playgrounds.

Apart from colleges and academic courses, the University also provides more than 380 courses under Distance Education System. The Distance Education system of the Annamalai University is very famous as it accepts students from all over India and also from other foreign countries. This University is the first choice for all students who unable to attend the regular classes or who want to study while working. Even the Annamalai University has the record for more number of students studied through distance education than regular education mode. 

In year 2005, Annamalai University opened its small campus in Toronto, Canada to presume Indian fine arts to the students whoever interested. This University also holds many centres in and around the world; some of the overseas centres of Annamalai University includes the Al Mihad Institute in Dubai, the Al Noor Education Centre located in Muscat, Oman and the Al Hilal Education Centre located in United Arab Emirates.

The Library of the Annamalai University is another  key resource of information for the students and the staff members from all departments and it is named after the prominent Scholar solon and former Vice-Chancellor Dr. Sir C.P.Ramaswami Aiyer. The Library is well furnished with excellent study area, different areas for different department books, journals, internet connection and CD network station.

Annamalai University Admission 

Annamalai University is the one of the most preferred university for distance education and learning. This university has the largest number of enrollment in the country and is well equipped with infrastructure and computer, ample faculty members, study centers, computer centers for training etc, to provide necessary study material and facility to its students located in every part of the country.  Apart from regular courses, Annamalai University has various courses to offer. There are numerous credits under the belt as they are the first in the country to offer Post Graduate Program in Applied Psychology, chemistry, botany, computer science, law, zoology and physics through distance education and learning mode.

They also offer programs in hotel management software, materials, technology and management in Health Science, music, yoga, pharmaceutical and taxation courses, fashion design, security and fire protection. All courses offered by the university under distance mode are approved by DDE (Directorate of Distance education, New Delhi). From the academic session 2008-2009, the latest course added in the list is B.Ed. Now anyone who wants to do B.Ed in a distance mode of learning can take admission in Annamalai University.

Dr. Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar from Chettinad was a single individual whose wisdom and objective saw foundation of Sri Meenakshi College based at Chidambaram the place known for pilgrimage values and its south Indian culture and traditional values in 1920. Later in 1928, under a special Act this Sir Meenakshi College was converted into Annamalai University and become centre of progressive education.  Sr. Annamalai acted as pro-chancellor for more than 20 years and paid attention for appointments of vice-chancellor along with professors, scholars and scientists known for their contribution in their fields. Later his eldest son took over as pro-chancellorship and gave new directions and dimensions to the university.  

The Directorate of Distance Education was his brainchild and become a point to be proud of by this university. Pharmacy and Nursing departments along with Faculty of medicine and Dental College were set up which helped in development and growth quality standards of this university to national level. Later under present pro-chancellor again his son this Annamalai University touched new heights of excellence. This university which was started only with six departments has now over 50 departments and 10 faculties. TO the credit of this university, it is the only university in India which has all Faculties situated in same campus with well equipped Central Library. Its Laboratories are not only having good facilities and ultra modern equipments for their research projects but also has eminent scholars to cope with latest training and educational programmes.

Today Annamalai University is known for its playgrounds in area of more than thousand acres, Colleges and Hostels with its hot courses in demand across the country. Its distant education programmes are also major sought after and are always in great demand.  This university has turned into full fledged university and adorns the state of Chidambaram, the abode of Lord Shri Nataraja, which also forms the symbol of this university. Annamalai University was established in the year 1928 and is located Annamalainagar in Cuddalore district of TamliNadu. Over the last 75 years this institute has opened 48 Department in all 9 facilities and is one of the few institutes which have the entire department in same campus.

It offers various regular courses weather it is a management course or the science course or the arts it offers wide range of course. Other than correspondence and diploma courses this university do offers distance learning. It offers 380 courses.

The Directorate of distance learning which is offered by this university helps those students who cannot attend the lecture in the campus on a regular basis. The DDE is well equipped with computer and other infracsture with study centers and other computer centers. The DDE has also introduced with Dual degree system which can help the candidate to enable to acquire 2 degrees in 4 years having focus on Information Technology Education. The DDE is also offering courses such as Fashion Design, Textile Design, Interior Design and Hotel Management and many other professional courses.

Admission process:

Candidate can get the application form the directorate from any study centers by just paying Rs 250/-. The application form will not be transferable and should be in the prescribed form of academic year. Candidates who have passed under the qualifying pattern of 11+2+2 or 11+1+3. But candidate who have passed with the qualification examination under 10+2+2 pattern from any university will not be considered.

Applicants who have the degree of universities which is not recognized by the UGC will not be eligible for the admission.
