The Indira Gandhi National Open University, which is baptized after late Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India and commonly recognized as IGNOU, is instituted in 1985. It is one of the leading universities in the world. IGNOU is the national university and has headquarters in Delhi, India. Moreover, IGNOU functions as national resource centre as well as preserves standards of distance education in India.
Secretariats of SACODiL i.e. SAARC Consortium on Open and Distance Learning and GMUNET (Global Mega University Network) are also hosted by IGNOU. Intention of IGNOU is to impart education in system of distance and open education and enhance human resources of India. It works to set, arrange and improve standards of distance and open education.
The first Convocation of IGNOU was organized in 1989, and over 1000 students are graduated and honored with their diplomas. Audio-video courses by IGNOU were put on air in 1990 by television and radio. In view of the fact that, Indira Gandhi National Open University is as adept as other open universities in country, UGC (University Grants Commission) acknowledged IGNOU in 1992.
Virtual campus was first of all introduced in 1999 by Indira Gandhi National Open University. Courses of Information and Computer Science were presented by means of Internet. It was a great step taken by IGNOU in the field of distance and open education. At the present time, various programs including M. Phil, Ph. D and Masters Degree in many streams are offered by IGNOU.
Furthermore, 175 academic programs which embrace around 1100 courses of Degree as well as Diploma level. Currently, more than 2 million students from India and over 35 states abroad are being educated by IGNOU by way of around 21 schools. Distance Education Council has also given authority to IGNOU to grant other open universities under clause 16 and Statute 28 of Act of IGNOU.
