University of Kerala is among the first 16 university in India. University of Kerala was formerly known as University of Travancore. Since 1937, University has covered a great distance and it is difficult to summarize its achievements in a brief space. In 1937 when it was known as University of Travancore was founded by Maharajah of Travancore, Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma who also managed the post of chancellor of the university and that time diwan Sir C. P Ramaswamy Ayyar was in the position of vice chancellor. He was a great scholar and an eminent administrator. It is said university tried to attract Albert Einstein to be the first Vice Chancellor but it was unfortunate it could not happened. University wanted to replicate design the best universities of United Kingdom and was successful to put some of its features.
Today, the university has 16 faculties and forty-one departments of various disciplines that offer teaching and research facility. In addition it has many study centers and other departments. University focuses majorly on master programmes, doctorate and M.Phil programme. In the year, 2007 university awarded more than 100 Ph.d degrees to its eminent students. There is eminent list of scholars who teaches at University of kerala, which includes names like C.V.Raman, famous poet K Ayyappa Panciker, T Ganapathi Sasthri and many more. More than 2000 students are doing full time courses in the university and modest number of overseas students. Distance learning programme furnish more than 7000 students all over the world. Under the University, 150 colleges are affiliated. The prime object of the university is to commence study, conduct examination and issue degrees or certificates. Day to day operation of these institutions is not under the outlook of the university. More than 84000 students are getting education from these affiliated colleges and which likely to grow more in future.
