University of Mumbai which was previously known as University of Bombay is one of the most oldest and eminent university of the country. In the year 1857, it was established and it comes in the top three universities, which appeared first in the soil of the nation. With the change in the name of the city from Bombay to Mumbai, the name of the university also changed from University of Bombay to University of Mumbai in the year 1996 by the government of Maharashtra.
The university has played an important part in the development of the country and to the city of Mumbai in particular. It created load of opportunity and social values among the people in the city of Mumbai.
In the beginning university concentrated teaching at UG level and conducting examination. However, later university started delivering research and instructions at PG level. As a result, university created a department of Sociology and Civics & Politics. NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) granted five start status to the university. It has two campuses spread on an area of 230 and 13 acres with 1.25 million sq. feet of construction area, 84 thousand Sq. feet of Laboratory and 22 thousand Sq. Feet of classrooms. It has 354 affiliated colleges, 36 departments and 2 PG centers. It conducts various professional courses for the betterment of the students and has collaboration with industrial giants. University also has great involvement in sports and cultural activities. In the last decade, university witnessed huge raise in the number of students pursuing UG, PG or distance education from the university. Every year many faculty members visit overseas for academic activities. In the last five year many teachers from the university has won national or international educational awards. The central library of the university contains more than 850000 books, periodicals and journals.
