University of Mumbai

University of Mumbai was established in 1857 and it is one of the oldest institutions in India.  Holding more than 150 years of history, this University provides several courses at undergraduate, post-graduate and also research level. The University of Mumbai is also one of the most opted learning destinations in India, so to manage the mounting admission demand the university spread in two campuses which covers 230 acres and 13 acres of land area. University of Mumbai is amongst the oldest and leading Universities of India. It was recognized in the year 1857 resulting upon the "Wood's Education Dispatch", as well as it is amongst first three Universities of India. As a follow-up to change in name of city from Bombay to the Mumbai, name of University is changed from the "University of Bombay” toward "University of Mumbai ". The notification was issued by Government of Maharashtra as well as published in Government Gazette on 4 September 1996. The profile of Mumbai University carved in the 150 years of history to its various achievements like the intellectual as well as moral powerhouse of society. Located in the heart of Mumbai, Maharashtra, Mumbai University is one of the oldest universities in India. Mumbai University was established in the year 1857 by Dr. John Wilson. Back then it was modeled on the universities of the United Kingdom. Originally Mumbai University used the Elphinstone college building as its headquarters. Later on various campuses were set up to impart knowledge and look after the administration.  The list of Mumbai University campuses includes the Fort Campus, Kalina Campus and the Ratanagiri Campus. The Fort campus primarily looks after the administration process only and doesnot serve as a learning centre. Mumbai University offers various types of certificates, diplomas and degrees. Degrees offered by Mumbai University include Doctoral, Masters and Bachelors. Mumbai University imparts knowledge through affiliated colleges. Affiliated colleges are spread throughout Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Raigad, Thane and Mumbai.  Mumbai University was recently awarded a five star rank by the NAAC and was ranked amongst the top five hundred universities in the world. Several well know colleges like the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Institute of Chemical Technology, Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute and St Xaviers were affiliated to the Mumbai University before becoming autonomous. Mumbai University sports a huge central library called the Jawaharlal Nehru Library. The Jawaharlal Nehru Library houses twelve hundred rare manuscripts, thirty thousand microfilms and a staggering eight and a half lakh books, e-books, encyclopedias, theses, scientific journals, etc. The entire library and the documents contained is computerized. Apart from the Jawaharlal Nehru Library the Mumbai University also has a two hundred and eighty feet tall clock tower called the Rajabai Clock Tower that was modeled on the Big Ben. Mumbai University’s alumni includes well known people like Praful Patel, Aditi Govitrikar, Vidya Balan, Sunil Gavaskar, Lara Dutta, Mukesh Ambani, Lal Krishna Advani and Mahatma Gandhi.

His wife, Margaret Bayne Wilson, founded 16 schools mainly for girls, the most famous among them being St. Columbia High School. Initially, the Elphinstone College building was used for Mumbai University.

University of Mumbai Admission 
University of Mumbai which was previously known as University of Bombay is one of the most oldest and eminent university of the country. In the year 1857, it was established and it comes in the top three universities, which appeared first in the soil of the nation. With the change in the name of the city from Bombay to Mumbai, the name of the university also changed from University of Bombay to University of Mumbai in the year 1996 by the government of Maharashtra.

The university has played an important part in the development of the country and to the city of Mumbai in particular. It created load of opportunity and social values among the people in the city of Mumbai.

In the beginning university concentrated teaching at UG level and conducting examination. However, later university started delivering research and instructions at PG level. As a result, university created a department of Sociology and Civics & Politics. NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) granted five start status to the university. It has two campuses spread on an area of 230 and 13 acres with 1.25 million sq. feet of construction area, 84 thousand Sq. feet of Laboratory and 22 thousand Sq. Feet of classrooms. It has 354 affiliated colleges, 36 departments and 2 PG centers. It conducts various professional courses for the betterment of the students and has collaboration with industrial giants. University also has great involvement in sports and cultural activities. In the last decade, university witnessed huge raise in the number of students pursuing UG, PG or distance education from the university. Every year many faculty members visit overseas for academic activities. In the last five year many teachers from the university has won national or international educational awards.  The central library of the university contains more than 850000 books, periodicals and journals.
