University of Mumbai is amongst the oldest and leading Universities of India. It was recognized in the year 1857 resulting upon the "Wood's Education Dispatch", as well as it is amongst first three Universities of India. As a follow-up to change in name of city from Bombay to the Mumbai, name of University is changed from the "University of Bombay” toward "University of Mumbai ". The notification was issued by Government of Maharashtra as well as published in Government Gazette on 4 September 1996. The profile of Mumbai University carved in the 150 years of history to its various achievements like the intellectual as well as moral powerhouse of society. The University always has provided its best to country and to city of Mumbai by passionately shouldering the ever-growing stack of opportunities and social values.

Originally, the University determined its efforts to control the teaching at undergraduate level as well as in conducting the examinations. In a while, it took research and task of conveying instructions at Post-Graduate level, which resulted in establishment of University Departments starting with School of Civics, Sociology and Politics. The independence of country led to re-organization of functions as well as powers of University with passing of Bombay University Act, 1953.

It is now given Five Star rank by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council). It is having two campuses having area of 230 acres as well as 13 acres, having 1.25 million square feet built-up area, 22, 000 sq. feet for classrooms as well as 84, 000 sq feet for laboratory space. It is having two post-graduate centers, 36 Departments, and 354 affiliated colleges. It has recognized its name in the industrial collaborations, as well as runs different professional courses.
