Shivaji University, recognized in the year 1962, is named after Great Maratha Warrior as well as founder of Maratha Empire, the Chhatrapati Shivaji. It was opened on 18 November 1962 through Dr. Radhakrishnan, the President of India at that time. Amongst the major objectives of this University was providing to regional requirements of Southern Maharashtra. The jurisdiction of this University is spread in three districts, Sangli, Satara, and Kolhapur, having strength of around 2,00,000 students learning in the 225 affiliated colleges as well as recognized institutes. This region has rich and diverse socio-cultural heritage. Under ground-breaking and socially reformist management of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, who was princely ruler of the Kolhapur, this city had become the focal point of the educational opportunities to all classes as well as communities of the South-Western Maharashtra, as well as northern parts of the neighboring Karnataka.
In the 1962, Shivaji University began functioning having 34 affiliated colleges with around 14000 students and 5 Post-graduate Departments in the campus. Today, total affiliated colleges are more than 225 with students’ strength of up to 2, 00,000 and 34 Postgraduate Departments in campus. The University conveys education in 10 main faculties of Science, Commerce, Arts, Education, Social Science, Law, Fine Arts, Ayurvedic Medicine, Medicine, Technology, and Engineering.
The faculties of Social Sciences and Arts are gearing up also to meet demands of the changing time. Establishment of the Centre of Women's Studies as well as extension activities via Shramik Vidyapeeth and Adult and Continuing Education are indicators of the change. Department of Economics is selected by the UGC for the Special Assistance Program. Departments of Education, Sociology, Economics, Geography, and Physics are providing special courses in rising areas as the Environmental Science is functioning actively as well.
