On 10 December 1966 Orissa, government passed an act to built Sambalpur University and long wait of people of the region ends. From 1 January 1967, University started to operate under Prof.Parsuram Mishra who was appointed as first vice chancellor. Honorable Chancellor A.N.Khosla did inauguration on 4 January 1967. They started operating from a rented private building located at Dhanupali, Sambalpur. Soon they shifted to a Government building at Ainthapali, Sambalpur and operated from 1968-72. Later in the year 1973, university shifted to Jyoti Vihar at Burla, which is also the present campus of the university.
University campus is situated 15 km away from Sambalpur in a calm and quite atmosphere at Burla. The pioneer university offer courses at UG and PG level. Governor of Orissa holds the position of Vice chancellor. University is covered by dense forest and hills. Campus is very beautiful and natural. People can enjoy the greenery during winter and rainy season. Sambalpur University is famous for its knowledge and experience in teaching and training. In the year, 1988 university also started distance-learning program in coordination with PG department of the university.
University covers more than 10 districts under its jurisdiction namely Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Bargarh, Sabaranapur, Kalahandi, Boudh, Bolangir, Jharsuguda, and Nawapara. University offers Twenty-seven subjects for PG education via Twenty PG departments. They offer one-year M.Phil degree two years degree in MBA, LLM, Msc, MA, M.Lib & Inf. Science, Three year MCA course and one year diploma courses in Computer science and studies and in Sambalpuri Studies. There are about 10 hostels in the campus four are for girls and rests 6 are for boys. Hostel provides various facilities like TV in common room, guest room, First aid, newspaper and magazine, STD booth and many more. Canteen is very nearer to the hostel as well as one post office, nationalized bank, auditorium, Faculty house and community center.
