Kalyani University was established in the year 1960, having campus area of more than 400 acres in the Kalyani town. It is very well linked by railway and road, with the railway station near to University. The University is located in the area surrounded by the rural setting inside the rural background and it provides mainly to students of the rural as well as backward areas. However, its distance from the Kolkata is 50 km only. This advantage of University makes it predominantly suitable for 'Cafeteria Approach' for higher education. The University makes sure on one hand, expansion of excellence, on other input of the higher education via dispersion of the knowledge to the rural areas in the open and stretchy system. The University is considering possibility of upgrading its affiliated colleges with the academic autonomy as well as postgraduate teaching. University has finished four decades of creditable service for development for higher education with keeping view of the importance of remote rural economy as well as the requirements and aspirations of youth in region. University is at present providing twenty-three postgraduate programs below four faculties, namely, Arts & Commerce, Science, Education, and Engineering Technology & Management. 

  

The University is offering academic guidance as well as leadership to 36 associated degree colleges situated in districts of Murshidabad, Nadia, and parts of the N. 24 Parganas. Additionally, engineering colleges were associated with this University for last three years. In recent times, all these colleges are transferred to newly established, West Bengal University of Technology. Nevertheless, the existing students of colleges in last two years are recorded, as the students of Kalyani University as well as this University are dependable for running the academic program. The standard of teaching within the affiliated colleges is observed by the Planning Board, the Council of Undergraduate Studies, and selected CDC (College Development Council), via process of the academic audit. After affiliating with these colleges, this University has discontinued undergraduate programs of university departments from the year 2000-2001.
