Vidyasagar College, Kolkata  

Vidyasagar College was established in year 1872. This college had its beginning in Calcutta Training School, which was established by Thakurdas Chakraborty in the year 1859. In year 1864, this school began to be recognized as Metropolitan Institution. In the year 1872, University of Calcutta provided affiliation to Institution for FA (First Arts) standard. The beginning of first private as well as secular college in Presidency of the Bengal was called like a landmark in academic as well as cultural culture of India.  

Pandit Iswarchandra Vidyasagar, a great Indian social reformer and educationalist, was associated with this College from the year 1872. This college is an alive monument of determined labors of the Vidyasagar, the founder of this college. After his death in the year 1891, his name was given to this college in 1917. 

Perfectly, the college in the new phase thrived to develop into a leading center of the higher education for both Science and Arts. The college was given the permission of study of the Post Graduate curriculum so, today it may boast of all the facilities for Honors Course for 18 subjects in Science and Art in the under graduate curriculum as well as some post graduation courses.

With its well-equipped laboratories and library and committed and well-qualified faculty in different disciplines, Vidyasagar College provides the appropriate infrastructure as well as environment to students today for complete development of the potentials.

Situated in North Kolkata, next to College Street, this college also has residential hostel housing for students in the nearby building on Bidhan Sarani to facilitate students from remote areas, to live in hostel and study in college.

The college has begun steps for the development, consolidation, and expansion. Some land has been obtained in the Salt Lake City to build and develop spacious and exclusive second campus. It will facilitate college to set up new courses for study in the vocational as well as job-oriented disciplines with conducting doctoral as well as postdoctoral research activities.
