Punjab University, Chandigarh

Being one of the oldest universities in India, Punjab University is spread over 550 acres of land area. The University was established in 1882 at Lahore which is now in Pakistan. After independence, the university had no campus for nearly 10 years, this is due to the partition in 1947. During that period the administrative office of the University was situated at Solan, Himachal Pradesh and the academic courses was functioned in Delhi, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, and Amritsar. And in the year 1956, the Punjab University was resettled at Chandigarh. The campus of the University was built in red sandstone designed by Pierre Jeanneret. Till 1966, the Punjab university had its regional centres in different places such as Shimla, Rohtak, Jalandhar and the colleges connected to this University were situated in the different states of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and U.T. of Chandigarh. After the shakeup, the University turned an Inter-State Body Corporate.

The Unuiversity of Punjab is located in 14 and 25 sectors of Chandigarh city. The main buildings that is administrative and academic constructions are situated in sector 14, and the University’s health care centre, hostels, a sports complex  and residential Quarters are also present in the same campus. The Punjab university holds about 58 educational activities and research departments and  nearly 10 centres for education and research at the main campus which is situated in Chandigarh. The University holds about 172 affiliated colleges in various places including Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and Chandigarh and Regional Centres of the University is present in Muktsar, Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, and Hoshiarpur. Punjab University holds many academic courses in almost all departments, such as arts, science, social sciences, humanities, engineering and technology and sports. The Punjab University holds many landmarks in its campus some of them are Gandhi Bhawan, Student Center, four museums, a botanical garden,a medicinal plants garden and its own theatre lab.
