Admission to the course is open to candidates possessing B. Sc. degree with Chemistry / Botany / Zoology / Microbiology as a Principal subject and any two of the following as subsidiary subjects - Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Agriculture, Botany Seed Plant, Biochemistry and Plant Protection. However, one of the three subjects must be chemistry and one must be Botany or Zoology or Microbiology. OR B.Tech or B. Chem. Engg. or equivalent degree with biology at least at Std. XII. Candidates with B. Sc. B. Tech., B. Chem. Engg. degree of Indian Universities are eligible provided the courses are given approval for equivalence to those of the Shivaji University. Those with degree from a recognized foreign University may also apply.

Shivaji University, established in 1962, is located in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India. It is best known for its literature, arts, commerce and science departments, as well as biotechnology and environmental studies in Maharashtra. The University is named after Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, founder of the Maratha Empire. It was inaugurated on 18 November 1962 by Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, then the President of India. Yashwantrao Chavan and Balasaheb Desai took the lead in establishing this University. Kolhapur Sangli, and Satara come under its jurisdiction. One of the major objectives behind foundation of this University was to cater to the regional needs of South Maharashtra.
