A renowned mathematician named Sir. Asutosh Mukherjee had established this college. Asutosh College is associated under the University of Calcutta. This college has rich heritage, which contributes to own culture. This College was built in 1916, under guidance of Shri Asutosh Mukherjee, a well-known educationist and mathematician. He then became Vice-Chancellor of University of Calcutta. This College was then identified as South Suburban College. When Sir Asutosh Mukherjee passed away in the year 1924, this college was renamed with his name.
Asutosh College then shifted to its present location in the year 1935. The existing college building has ground of 40, 000 square feet having over 50 classrooms that may contain around 4000 students. 27 subjects are educated as Honors or Major at Undergraduate level. In 2002, the post graduation course for Environmental Science was started. All departments have their individual libraries as well as well-organized laboratories for the Science departments.
Asutosh College is only college in the South Kolkata having hostel facilities. It has two boy’s hostels situated at Kalighat Road and Basanta Bose Road. Nevertheless, existing seats are inadequate to meet requirements of all the boarders. Seats are selected clearly on the severe merit-cum-distance base. Facilities of indoor game are existing at Students' Common Room. Different magazines and newspapers are available so that the students may refresh current information during off-periods.
College has well-resourced Seminar Hall, situated in the Annex building where the lecturers as well as academic workshops are detained regularly. The hall is prepared with high-end projection and audio equipments. It can house 200 people at one time. There are Seminar Libraries for benefit of students. The library offers 2 mbps of Broadband Internet speed.
There is positive relation between union and administration. The atmosphere of college is favorable for serious study. Critical inputs are received from students' union, however, administration and union co-operate to guarantee discipline. This co-operation spirit has made certain that no workday was lost in last year owing to student unrest.
