Madurai Kamaraj University is located in the southern part of India in the state Tamilnadu. After five years in education, they started distance education department in the year 1966. For establishment in distance learning they seek approval from Distance Education Council (DEC) New Delhi, which they received without much trouble. They just reamed the university the Directorate of Distance Education (DDE). Very recently, UGC had given the university center for excellence along with other eight universities of the country.
Students at DDE can get spot admission at any of the center in Tamilnadu. There is overall 34 study center in the state. Admission happens in DDE twice a year in all disciplines. At 13 centers in Tamilnadu face to face, interaction feature is available for student pursuing distance education. However, he can avail the facility only for 56 hours/year/student. Tuition fee is totally exempted for disables. Apart from providing course, material selected study centers conducts classes on Saturdays and Sundays in the state. Students who have diploma in Polytechnics can take direct admission in the degree courses. Those who want to purse dual course can easily do so. Those who left the course in between can rejoin in any university with year exempted. State government runs various scheme to promote education among ST/SC students, they can avail benefits like scholarships and rebate in fees.
Madurai Kamaraj University started distance learning education with a motive to provide higher education to the people of unreached region. To offer equal educational right to the working people including teachers and officers, to provide education at a very nominal cost, to open the doors of education that have left education due to any of his personal reason.
In the subsequent years, the growth of DDE was tremendous and they had initiated courses like B.ED, M.A. in Mass Communication and Journalism, Master of Labor Management, MBA, MCA, M.Phil. & PG course etc.
