Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)
IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) is the nationalized university and is placed in the capital city of New Delhi with its head Quarters. Named after the earlier Indian Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi, this university was one of the prime public sector ventures in the year it was established i.e.1985. This education venture of the government was placed with the financial costing of Rs. 2000 crore. This university was so developed Under the Act of 1985 of the Indian Parliament.
IGNOU, being one of the prime universities is accounted as among the biggest universities of the world and imparts education by both open and distance learning methods. The primary aim of this university to be founded and run is to provide the facilities for higher education programs for those sections of the society that are under- privileged. It also aims to raise the standards of education in the country by both open and distant methods and also to strengthen the Indian workforce through educating them in all the possible fields.
IGNOU has not only been an education institution but has equally been involved with some of the most important government activities. Known for the quality of education it imparts, IGNOU has been a teaching, research and training institution as well. It plays as a nation wide resource center of India in all terms and hosts the Secretariats of the SACODiL acronym for SAARC Consortium on Open & Distance Learning & GMUNET (Global Mega Universities Network) which was earlier funded by UNESCO.
IGNOU has an approximately 2 million students with India and 35 other countries. There are 21 schools outside India while 59 centers in India. Such a vast network is what the IGNOU is composed of. Moreover apart of these there are 7 sub- regional centers, 2300 study centers and 52 overseas centers. IGNOU extends about 175 academic courses including 1100 courses of certificate, diploma or degree status.
This university though has been among the primary academic institutions in the country and the world.
