Presidency College was previously known as the Hindu College is amongst the oldest colleges in Kolkata. This College was established with idea of spreading the English Language education amongst Hindu population. In 1817, Hindu College was recognized with some numbers of students. The classes were taken in the rented house next to 304-chitpore road. After that when administration became reliant on the government for the financing, college was altered to the Presidency College. The College was unlocked to people from every casts and religions. At present, the college is located at the College Street in Kolkata having 14.5 acres area. This college came under Government's straight control in the year 1855. The college provides both Undergraduate as well as Postgraduate courses. The college is having NAAC A+ accredited institute and is amongst the best-known Science colleges of Kolkata.
The College is having excellent infrastructure. It has mainly four main buildings recognized as Derozio Building, Main building, laboratory block, and Netaji Subhas Building. The college has Canteen, central library, Gymnasium, cricket and Football ground & a lot of other facilities.
The college provides undergraduate and postgraduate degrees associated with the Kolkata University. Subjects taught in College are Botany, Bengali, Biochemistry, Chemistry, English, Economics, Geology, Geography, Hindi, Mathematics, History, Physics, Philosophy, Political Science, Physiology, Statistics, Sociology and Zoology.
Each year the admission tests are organized for each subject before the admission of new batch. The minimum criterion is put for the students appearing for test. For the postgraduate courses, the application forms may be provided according to criterions provided by College. The tests will be organized after that.
A first round screening is organized based on the previous academic records; afterward the admission test is valid for all the Honors subjects. The college provides equivalent importance to candidate’s presentation in admission test as well as also in last emerged public exam.
