St. Xaviers College, Kolkata
The Xaviers College Kolkata was established by Fr. Depelchin on January 16, 1860. The Xavier’s College was named after a sixteenth century Jesuit saint who travelled to India called ST. Francis Xavier. The Xavier’s college was the first autonomous college in the state of West Bengal. Xaviers College became autonomous in July 2006. Awarded as the best commerce college in India, St. Xavier’s College Kolkata is one of the most prestigious colleges in India. St. Xavier is well known for its alumni from different fields like education, cinema, literature, politics and business. St Xavier’s College is affiliated with the University of Calcutta. St Xavier’s College offers various courses at the post graduate and graduate levels. Most of the courses offered fall under five different faculties, viz., Education, Business Administration, Science, Commerce and Arts. The Post Graduate Courses include B.Ed, M.Com, Msc. in Physics (Astrophysics), M.Sc. in Microbiology, M.Sc. in Biotechnology and M.Sc. in Computer Science. The college is well known for its B.Com course. Even though St Xaviers is autonomous, degree certificates are issued by the University of Calcutta. St. XAviers College Kolkata was recently awarded Grade A by the NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) and was identified by the University Grants Commission as Centers with Potential Excellence. St Xaviers also sports world class infrastructure which includes an auditorium, laboratory, library and a hostel. St Xaviers is equipped with a very well equipped Zoology, Botany, Computer Science, Statistics, Chemistry and Physics laboratory that can cater to all the needs of teaching students.
