The college was established back in 1860 under Fr Depelchin. The campus of college can be found at 30 Park Street (now known as Mother Teresa Sarani), Kolkata, 700016. The college has little dramatic history behind its building. At the current place where college building is present, San Souci theatre was doing business. But after some years, the theatre was burnt by students in order to build a college. The land then was handed to the group of Jesuits which then built this college. The college provides quality education at both under graduate and post graduate level. It has courses in all three faculties, viz. Science, Commerce and Arts.Since 2006, the college has formed its own evaluation system. Still all the degree certificates are handed to the students by Kolkata University.

The St. Xavier’s College is situated at the heart of economic capital of India, Mumbai. The St Xavier’s College is a Roman Catholic college with Jesuit tradition. The college was named after Francis Xavier; a Spanish Jesuit saint lived past in 16th century. It has been awarded with an “A+” rating in re-accreditation of colleges by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) which is the highest possible rating any college can receive. The St Xavier’s college is built very beautifully; it is a mixture of indo-gothic style and has been recognized as a heritage structure. The main building of college faced expansion on major scale in 1930 as the available space wasn’t enough to accommodate all the classrooms.

The St Xavier’s college was established in 1869 by the German Jesuits. At the beginning the college used to be operated with only art department but by 1920, science department was also added. And hence even today, Xavier’s college, Mumbai is considered as one of the most prestigious colleges offering art faculty in India. In 2006 issue of India Today magazine, college was ranked first among all the colleges in India offering art faculty and second for the science and commerce faculties.

St. Xavier's College was founded in the year 1860 by the Catholic Minority Religious organization, Society of Jesus; moreover, it was affiliated with Calcutta University in the year 1862. While preference is given to educational as well as cultural requirements of Minority community, admission will be given to all the irrespective of creed, caste, and nationality. St. Xavier's College provides Under Graduate and Pot Graduate courses in five faculties: Science, Arts, Commerce, Education, and Business Administration. It also provides different professional diploma and degree courses under the Career Oriented Programs, at IGNOU Convergence Scheme as well as Computer Centre.

The instruction medium is English. Nevertheless, candidates coming from dialect medium schools are provided facilities to develop their skills of spoken English. 

History

The quarter of the century before current St Xavier’s College started in the year 1860 in redundant San Souci Theatre with Park St, by Belgian Jesuits, the international group for Jesuits specially made by English Jesuit Province grounded in the Calcutta to appear after interests of Catholics. The team was lead by the Dr Robert St Leger. 

A follower of Jesuits with active support for laying people well known amongst them being O’Briens, Cantophers, and Corneliuses, and Belgian Jesuits were demanded to come at Calcutta to watch over education of Catholic community. In the year 1859, Jesuits grounded on shores of Charnock city, by making no. 10 Pk St, home, and handed over by Mgr Olliffe.

On the 16 January 1860, college of the St. Francis Xavier personified with St Xavier’s College in 10 Park St. Its founder and leader was Fr Depelchin. This college was given affiliation by the Calcutta University in the year 1862.
