St. Xavier's College, Mumbai
The St. Xavier’s College is situated at the heart of economic capital of India, Mumbai. The St Xavier’s College is a Roman Catholic college with Jesuit tradition. The college was named after Francis Xavier; a Spanish Jesuit saint lived past in 16th century. It has been awarded with an “A+” rating in re-accreditation of colleges by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) which is the highest possible rating any college can receive. The St Xavier’s college is built very beautifully; it is a mixture of indo-gothic style and has been recognized as a heritage structure. The main building of college faced expansion on major scale in 1930 as the available space wasn’t enough to accommodate all the classrooms.
The St Xavier’s college was established in 1869 by the German Jesuits. At the beginning the college used to be operated with only art department but by 1920, science department was also added. And hence even today, Xavier’s college, Mumbai is considered as one of the most prestigious colleges offering art faculty in India. In 2006 issue of India Today magazine, college was ranked first among all the colleges in India offering art faculty and second for the science and commerce faculties.
The Xavier’s college offers various courses in all three faculties, viz. science, commerce and arts at both under graduate and post graduate levels. Presently the college is being run by Indian Jesuits and special consideration is provided to Roman Catholic students. The college has established several research institutions within the campus area such as Blatter Herbarium.
If a question to be asked to any student “what Xavier’s college is best known for?” the answer surely will be, for Malhar – an intercollegiate event of youth. It is an event, which is organized by students of Xavier’s college for the youth. It contains everything that might appeal the current generation like dance, quizzes, talent shows etc.
The college is certainly one of the best colleges in India and hence it is becoming very difficult day by day to get admission in St Xavier’s College!
