Bangalore University (BU) is one of the oldest universities of the country and is located in the city of Bangalore, Karnataka, India. In the year 1886, it was established with the motive to provide higher education to the people living in the surroundings. Bangalore University is a member of AIU (Association of Indian Universities) and close to status of “Potential for Excellence” which is given to top 10 universities of the nation as per the norms of UGC (University Grants Commission).
Several departments of the university have been given the status of “Centers of Excellence”. University focuses on research work with various local and foreign universities collaboration. Today university operates from two campuses namely the Jnana Bharathi Campus and the Central College Campus. Bangalore University is the one who gave birth to universities like the National Institute Mental Health and Neuroscience, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Science and Visvesvarya Technological University.
With many emerging university in the state of Karnataka, Bangalore University has lost its federal character and just became a state-affiliated university. In the year 1973, university shifted to Jnana Bharathi Campus, which has land of about 1100 acres. Every year Bangalore University is producing largest number of PhDs compared to any other university in the nation. It has great reputation in aboard that is why every year application for admission from foreign students is growing drastically.
Bangalore University has two central libraries, one in the central college campus and another one at Jnana Bharathi Campus with more than 35000 books, Journals and periodicals. Very recently, Bangalore University introduced a project called BALNET, which connects all libraries of the university as well as the library of affiliated colleges. This project is one of its kind in the country and it was first came in the mind of Dr PV Kannur who himself is a librarian at the university.
